My practice covers trusts, estates, and life planning for seniors, individuals with disabilities, caregivers, and others in the District of Columbia. Matters handled include petitions for guardianship of incapacitated individuals, assistance through the probate process, and legal guidance on conservatorships. In addition, the practice involves counsel on devising wills, estates, trusts, special needs trusts, powers of attorney, and advance health care directives, as well as on eligibility requirements for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, Medicare, and other federal and DC programs.
I have practiced family law in DC for more than ten years and am a co-founder of the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project. I provide compassionate, skilled legal representation in a full range of family law matters. I earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
The DC Tenants' Rights Center provides lower-cost, high-quality legal services to DC tenants. (We are the only private law firm in DC that ONLY represents tenants.) We help tenants with a range of issues, including evictions, housing code violations, security deposits, rent control violations, and housing discrimination. We offer unbundled services, including advice, negotiation, help filling out legal forms and preparing for court, and full legal representation in court.
Mr. Krop has broad experience drafting appeals, waivers, court motions and briefs, and represents clients at USCIS interviews and in immigration court proceedings. Mr. Krop also represents clients in all aspects of family law including custody and visitation, divorce, division of marital property, spousal and child support and domestic violence matters. Krop works together with his clients to resolve their family law matters through negotiation, mediation, collaborative law and, when necessary, litigation.
I help my clients through separation and divorce, the division of property, creating custody and parenting arrangements, determining child and spousal support, and resolving paternity disputes. My style reflects my client’s needs and what will best meet their goals, whether through negotiation, mediation, the Collaborative Process, or litigation. My goal is to help my clients address their interests and forge a path forward in a supportive environment in which they make informed decisions.
Currently, my law practice focuses on criminal appellate and trial practice primarily for people of limited financial means, juveniles and immigrants. I have been appointed by the D.C. Court of Appeals to represent indigent defendants under the Criminal Justice Act. My experience includes providing limited representation to indigent criminal defendants in initial appearance proceedings, and providing representation to prisoners seeking post-conviction relief from incarceration. I represent victims of domestic violence in civil protection orders cases. My training includes case assessment and advocacy for LGBTQ clients as well as victims of intimate partner domestic violence.
My practice is taxpayer civil and criminal representation before the IRS, the Florida Department of Revenue, and other taxing jurisdictions. I have been a tax professional since 2001, having owned a National Retail Tax Franchise. In 2012, I began representing clients before the IRS and State Jurisdictions as an Enrolled Agent. The Jefferson Firm, LLC represents clients (individuals, small businesses, and tax practitioners) nationwide in federal taxation and controversy matters. Essentially, the firm handles “all things tax.”

I welcome the opportunity to get to know you, your case, and your family.
Experience. Compassion. Skill
I have extensive experience in litigating family law cases on behalf of parents, caregivers and children. Most recently, I served as Legal Director of the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project, where I represented domestic violence survivors and at-risk children in custody, divorce, and civil protection order matters. Previously, I had a solo family law practice in D.C. and Maryland. I received my law degree from Georgetown University and my undergraduate degree from Williams College, and also completed Masters-level coursework at the University of Maryland School of Social Work.
